A damaged screen does not always leave a phone completely blank. This iPhone 16 Plus arrived at Fonebook with most of its display dark and only a strip of the picture visible near the bottom. Cracks were also visible around the upper corner of the glass.
Our photos follow the job from the damaged display to close-up work on a display chip, the screen assembly and a later power-on check. The final footage shows the phone displaying a full keypad again. Here is a look inside this repair at our shop in Horden, near Peterlee.
Before the repair: most of the picture was missing
The first photo shows the problem clearly. The phone was producing an image at the bottom of the screen, while the much larger area above it remained dark. That made the display difficult to use, even though part of the phone's interface was still visible.
This is useful information to give a repair technician: whether the screen is completely blank, showing only part of a picture, displaying lines or responding differently in different areas.

A closer look at the display chip work
This job also involved work on a small display chip, commonly called an IC. The close-up photos show the component removed from the display assembly, its tiny solder contacts and the chip positioned on the display flex during the work.
These are actual photographs from the Fonebook repair bench. They show a part of screen repair that is usually hidden once the phone is assembled: the small components and connections behind the visible display.

Connecting the screen assembly
Another photo shows the opened handset with the display assembly connected. Keeping a record of these stages helps show the work behind the finished appearance of a phone repair.

After the work: a full picture again
The later photos show the Apple start-up logo, and the follow-up clip shows a full keypad across the display. The image below is a still from that clip. It shows the visible change from the original fault, where only the bottom strip displayed a picture.

A clear picture is one part of assessing a screen repair. Touch response, brightness and colour also matter. Apple's information about iPhone displays explains these aspects of display performance. Ask which screen option is being fitted and which checks are included when comparing repair quotes.

Frequently asked questions
Can a screen be damaged even if part of the picture still works?
Yes. This job is an example of a phone displaying an image in one area while most of the screen remained dark. The visible symptoms help describe the fault, but an inspection is needed to confirm the repair required.
Does every iPhone screen repair need chip work?
The work required depends on the fault and the screen option being fitted. This case includes close-up display chip work; it does not mean every iPhone 16 Plus repair follows the same process.
How much will my iPhone 16 Plus screen repair cost?
The quote depends on the phone's condition and the available part option. Check the current iPhone repair options on our website or contact the shop for a quote for your handset.
Where can I bring my iPhone for assessment?
