If your iPhone 17 Pro Max screen has cracked, you face a choice: pay for a genuine Apple display or save money with a third-party OLED repair. At Fonebook in Horden, near Peterlee, our budget OLED screen replacement is around £110, supplied and fitted. But which option would we actually recommend?

Our answer may surprise you: if you can comfortably afford an original Apple screen, we recommend the original. If you need a more affordable repair, a good replacement OLED is a practical alternative—as long as you understand the differences.

We see iPhone 17 Pro Max screen damage in our repair workshop, including cracked glass around dented corners. Here is what our hands-on experience has taught us about price, colour, repair time, parts messages and warranties.

iPhone 17 Pro Max screen repair cost: Apple Store vs Fonebook

For a customer paying without AppleCare+, price is often the biggest difference. UK pricing guides commonly quote around £389 for an Apple out-of-warranty iPhone 17 Pro Max screen repair, but Apple's live estimate and in-person inspection determine the actual amount. Check Apple's UK screen repair pricing page before making a decision.

Our Fonebook budget OLED option is around £110 for the replacement display and fitting, and we provide a VAT receipt. Prices and parts availability should be confirmed when booking; frame damage or other faults may affect a final quote. Businesses registered for VAT may be eligible to reclaim VAT on qualifying business expenses, subject to HMRC rules and having a valid VAT invoice.

| What matters | Apple Store / authorised repair | Fonebook budget OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Typical price without cover | Around £389 in UK price guides; confirm with Apple | Around £110 supplied and fitted |
| Screen | Genuine Apple display | Aftermarket OLED |
| Colour and calibration | Original Apple display characteristics | May appear slightly warmer; varies by panel |
| Typical turnaround | Depends on location, booking and stock | Around 30 minutes for a straightforward job |
| Parts and Service History | Genuine when verified and configured correctly | An Unknown Part message can appear |
| Repair guarantee | Apple's 90-day service guarantee or remaining Apple warranty, whichever is longer | Fonebook's one-year limited screen warranty for covered faults |

Important AppleCare+ exception: If your damage is eligible under AppleCare+, the screen excess can be £25, which may make an Apple repair cheaper than an aftermarket replacement. Check your actual plan and damage classification. See Apple's UK AppleCare information.

Does an aftermarket OLED look exactly like the Apple original?

No—and we think repair shops should say that clearly.

On some of the £110 OLED screens we've fitted, we have noticed that white areas look a little yellowish or warmer compared with an original Apple display. The size and general appearance of the replacement screen can be similar, but matching dimensions does not mean identical colour reproduction, peak brightness, touch feel or refresh behaviour.

For someone who mainly calls, messages, browses and watches video, a budget OLED can still be a reasonable way to get their phone working again. For photography, graphic design or someone very particular about screen quality, we lean toward genuine Apple or the closest available premium replacement.

*The picture above illustrates a possible visual difference, not a laboratory comparison. True Tone, Night Shift, brightness and panel batch can all change how screens look.*

Hard OLED or soft OLED: what should you choose?

There are different aftermarket screen types. Hard OLED uses a more rigid panel construction and is commonly positioned as a budget choice. Soft OLED uses a flexible substrate, and at Fonebook it is generally the option we recommend if you want a closer alternative to the original screen.

We can discuss available hard OLED and soft OLED options with you. £110 refers to our budget OLED repair option; it is not a confirmed fitted price for every soft OLED option. Ask for the current fitted quote and what you can expect in colour, durability and display performance.

What we see in real iPhone 17 Pro Max repairs: corner dents and broken glass

Something we have seen repeatedly on damaged iPhone 17 Pro Max handsets is a dent or impact mark at a corner, with cracked display glass nearby.

The 17 Pro Max has an aluminium unibody design. The earlier iPhone 15 Pro Max and 16 Pro Max have titanium designs. The different materials do not, by themselves, tell you which device is more drop-resistant, but corner impact damage is worth looking for before fitting a new screen. Apple confirms the model materials in its iPhone identification guide.

Why this matters: A dented or distorted frame may affect how well the new screen sits. We inspect the condition of the frame, not only the cracked glass. If the phone is bent or damaged beyond the display, a screen-only quote might not cover everything required.

This is a workshop observation from multiple repairs, not a claim that every iPhone 17 Pro Max breaks in the same way.

Will a replacement screen show a non-genuine or Unknown Part warning?

Possibly. Modern iPhones keep a record of certain repairs at Settings → General → About → Parts and Service History. Apple may show Unknown for a non-genuine display or an unverified or malfunctioning part; Used can appear with a previously used genuine component. The exact result depends on the replacement part, software and repair process. Apple's Parts and Service History guide explains the labels.

At Fonebook, we can also discuss advanced screen-related component transfers, sometimes referred to as *chip transplants*. Our technicians have experience working with the original screen circuitry and its associated components, and we assess whether any additional work is appropriate for the specific handset.

However, transferring an original chip does not make an aftermarket panel genuine, and it does not guarantee that Apple will remove or avoid a parts-history warning. We will explain what can realistically be achieved before doing extra work. A chip-transfer job usually takes at least one hour, compared with approximately 30 minutes for a straightforward display replacement. Confirm any additional price separately.

How long does Fonebook take, and can I keep my data?

A standard screen replacement normally takes us around 30 minutes, subject to technician availability, stock and the condition of the phone. When the shop is quiet, you may be able to wait while we work. We also welcome walk-ins; online booking is available at fonebook.co.uk.

In our normal screen replacement process, we don't deliberately erase or access your personal photos and files. Nonetheless, no repairer should promise that all data is immune from unexpected faults. Back up your iPhone before either an Apple or an independent repair. Apple also advises customers to prepare and back up devices before service.

What does Fonebook's one-year screen warranty cover?

We offer a one-year limited warranty on covered screen faults, provided the replacement has not suffered later damage. As explained to customers in store, exclusions include scratches, chipped or cracked glass, other physical breakage, and liquid or water damage.

We use moisture indicators as part of our inspection process when considering possible liquid damage. An indicator is one piece of diagnostic evidence rather than proof, on its own, of the cause of a fault.

A repaired phone's original water-resistance rating should not be assumed to remain unchanged. Our repair warranty operates in addition to your UK statutory consumer rights.

Apple's own repair service guarantee is generally 90 days or the remaining Apple warranty, whichever is longer, subject to its terms and your legal rights. See Apple's repair information.

Our recommendation: when to use Apple, and when to choose Fonebook

Choose Apple or a provider using properly verified genuine Apple parts if:

  • You want the original display's colour, brightness, refresh behaviour and compatibility.
  • You have AppleCare+ and your damage qualifies for a low excess.
  • You plan to keep the phone for a long time and genuine-part history matters to you.

Consider Fonebook's aftermarket OLED if:

  • You are paying out of pocket and want to keep the repair cost down.
  • You understand that colour, brightness and other screen characteristics may vary.
  • You value a local, typically quick repair with a clearly explained screen option and limited repair warranty.

We don't believe the most expensive repair is always necessary, or that the cheapest display suits every customer. If you can afford genuine Apple, that is our first choice. If you are working to a budget, ask us about an OLED replacement.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Fonebook charge for an iPhone 17 Pro Max screen replacement?

Our budget aftermarket OLED replacement is approximately £110 supplied and fitted, with a VAT receipt. Confirm the final quote, stock and any extra work before repair.

Is a soft OLED screen better than hard OLED?

Soft OLED is generally our recommendation when a customer wants a closer alternative to the original Apple display. The actual experience depends on the panel supplier and specification, so ask to compare available options.

Will a £110 OLED screen remove the Unknown Part message?

Not necessarily. Aftermarket parts may be identified as Unknown in Parts and Service History. We can discuss advanced component work on an individual basis, but no chip transplant can guarantee genuine Apple verification.

Do I need to book an appointment?

No. Walk-ins are welcome at Fonebook in Horden. You can also book online at fonebook.co.uk. Straightforward repairs usually take around 30 minutes when a technician and part are available.

Can I claim VAT back on a screen repair for my business?

We provide a VAT receipt. VAT-registered businesses can generally reclaim input VAT on eligible business expenses, depending on their VAT arrangements and HMRC rules.

What happens if I drop the phone again after repair?

Fresh cracks, chips, scratches or other accidental damage are not covered by our limited one-year screen warranty. We can inspect the device and quote for any new repair.

Does an Apple screen replacement delete all my data?

Not automatically. Apple's service may require a device to be prepared or sometimes erased; our normal display replacement doesn't deliberately wipe it. In either case, back up important data before the repair.
