If your phone battery suddenly starts disappearing much faster than normal, do not order a replacement battery immediately. Fast drain can come from software, signal, screen use, heat or charging problems as well as an ageing battery.

Work through these checks in order. The aim is to find what changed.

1. Restart the phone and install stable updates

A restart can clear a process that has become stuck. Then check for operating-system and app updates.

After a major update, a phone can temporarily use more power while it indexes files, updates apps or completes background setup. Give it some time before judging the battery on the first few hours after an update.

2. Check which apps are using the battery

Open your phone's Battery settings and look at usage by app.

You are looking for something that does not match how you used the phone. If an app you barely opened is responsible for a large amount of background use, update it, review its permissions or limit background activity.

Do not obsessively force-close every app on an iPhone. Focus on an app that is behaving abnormally rather than treating the app switcher as a battery cleaner.

3. Reduce unnecessary background activity

Apps may refresh data, sync files, fetch mail or track activity when you are not actively looking at them.

Review background-refresh settings and turn off background access for apps that do not need it. Keep essential messaging, security and navigation functions in mind before disabling everything.

4. Check the screen

The display is a major power user.

Try:

  • reducing brightness to a comfortable level;
  • shortening screen timeout;
  • using auto-brightness where it works well for you;
  • reducing always-on display use if your phone supports it;
  • checking whether an app is keeping the screen awake.

If the battery lasts much better on a day with lower screen-on time, the battery itself may not be the only issue.

5. Look at mobile signal, 5G and hotspot use

A phone can use more power when it is struggling to maintain a mobile connection.

Fast drain can be more noticeable:

  • in low-signal buildings;
  • on trains or long journeys;
  • while using a personal hotspot;
  • while streaming on mobile data;
  • when navigation is running continuously.

If the problem happens mainly in one location, poor signal may be part of the explanation.

6. Review location, camera and navigation use

GPS navigation, camera recording, video calls and augmented-reality features can combine screen, processor, radio and sensor use.

Check whether your "battery problem" appears mainly on days when you use Maps, record a lot of video or make long video calls.

That is different from a phone losing a large amount of charge while sitting unused.

7. Use battery-saving mode when you need it

iPhone Low Power Mode and similar Android battery-saver modes reduce or delay some background functions.

Apple says Low Power Mode can reduce background app refresh, automatic downloads, display effects and other power use. It is useful when you need extra runtime and also useful diagnostically: if battery life improves dramatically, background activity may be contributing.

8. Keep the phone out of excessive heat

Heat is bad for battery longevity and can also change charging and performance in the moment.

Apple says iPhone is designed for use in ambient temperatures from 0°C to 35°C and may slow or pause charging when it is too hot or too cold.

Avoid charging a hot phone in direct sunlight, on a car dashboard or buried under bedding. If it is unusually hot, disconnect it from power and let it return to a normal temperature.

9. Check the charger, cable and charging port

A weak or damaged charging setup can make it look as though the battery is "not holding charge" when the phone is actually charging badly.

Try a known-good compatible cable and power adapter. Inspect the connector for obvious damage. If the cable only works at an angle, falls out easily or repeatedly disconnects, the charging port may need attention.

Do not push metal objects into the port. If compacted debris is suspected and you are not confident cleaning it safely, have it inspected.

10. Check battery health and consider replacement

If you have completed the software checks and the phone still drains rapidly every day, look at battery-health information if your model provides it.

Persistent fast drain becomes more suggestive of battery wear when it appears with:

  • unexpected shutdowns;
  • low maximum-capacity readings or a service message;
  • large percentage jumps;
  • poor runtime even with light use;
  • an older battery with many charge cycles.

At that point, a professional battery assessment can be more useful than another round of settings changes.

What if the phone is swollen?

Do not treat swelling as a normal battery-drain problem.

If the screen or back is lifting, the phone is bulging or the battery is exposed, stop charging it. Do not puncture it or press the phone closed. Arrange professional advice and minimise handling, especially if the device is hot or physically damaged.

Battery draining fast on a new phone?

A new phone can drain quickly during initial setup because it may be restoring photos, downloading apps, indexing content and learning usage patterns.

Give setup tasks time to complete, keep the phone updated and then compare battery life over normal days. If severe drain continues, check Battery settings for the process responsible.

When should you book a repair?

Book an inspection when:

  • fast drain continues after the checks above;
  • the phone shuts down unexpectedly;
  • charging is intermittent;
  • battery health reports significant degradation;
  • the phone is physically swelling;
  • you cannot tell whether the battery or charging system is at fault.

Fonebook lets you choose the exact repair when you know it, or choose diagnosis if you are unsure.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my battery draining fast even when I am not using my phone?

Look for background app activity, poor mobile signal, syncing, location access and software setup tasks. If standby drain remains high after troubleshooting, battery health or another hardware fault may need checking.

Does dark mode save battery?

It can reduce display power on phones with OLED screens in some conditions, especially at higher brightness, but it is only one factor. App activity, signal and screen-on time may matter more.

Will replacing the battery definitely fix fast drain?

No. Replacement helps when the battery is the cause. It will not solve an app, signal, charging-port or mainboard problem, which is why diagnosis matters.
